What to Do When Your Income Drops Sharply — an Algorithm for Painless Budget Cuts
When income drops, the instinct is to panic-cut everything or deny the problem. Neither works. Cut in a deliberate order: first, subscriptions and luxuries — streaming services, gym memberships, premium apps. Second, reduce variable expenses — cheaper groceries, less dining out, fewer impulse purchases. Third, negotiate fixed costs — call your landlord, insurance provider, phone company, and ask for reduced rates or hardship plans.
Only as a last resort should you cut things that affect your health or earning capacity — healthcare, education, tools of your trade, quality sleep. The goal is to buy time without destroying the foundation you will rebuild on. Write down the cuts you have made and the amounts saved. Seeing the total gives you control and often reveals that you can survive on less than you feared.
