Never Lend Money You Can't Afford to Lose

H howtolive.guide ·

When someone you care about asks for money, it is tempting to say yes regardless of your own situation. But lending money you genuinely need back creates silent resentment and puts the relationship under pressure that neither of you signed up for.

If you can afford to give it as a gift, do so freely. If you cannot, say no honestly. A clear boundary protects both your finances and the relationship. The discomfort of saying no lasts a moment; the tension of an unpaid debt can last years.

The point
Only lend what you could give away — it protects both your wallet and your relationships.

Learned this the hard way. Lent ; },000 to a close friend. Never got it back. Lost the money AND the friendship. Now I either gift it or say no. The relationship is more important than being a bank.

Exactly this. The moment you lend money, the power dynamic shifts and the friendship suffers.

My dad always said: "If you lend money, consider it a gift. If it comes back, that's a bonus."
