The 20-Minute Rule for Getting Unstuck

When you're stuck on a problem, most people do one of two things: give up after two minutes and ask for help, or stubbornly grind for hours refusing to admit they need it. Both are bad strategies. Give yourself exactly 20 minutes of focused, genuine effort before seeking help. Set a timer. During those 20 minutes, try different approaches, re-read the material, draw diagrams — actually work the problem.
Twenty minutes is long enough to push through superficial confusion and often find the answer yourself. But it's short enough to prevent the sunk-cost trap of struggling alone all afternoon. When you do ask for help after 20 minutes, you'll ask better questions because you'll know exactly where you got stuck, not just that you're stuck.
The point
Give yourself 20 focused minutes on a problem before asking for help — long enough to try, short enough to avoid wasting time.
