What to Do If a Roommate Moves Out and Leaves Belongings Behind
A roommate leaves, and suddenly there is a box of dishes, a lamp, and a mattress that are not yours and not quite trash either. Do not throw anything away right away — text or email them with a clear deadline: "Please pick up your things by [date], or I will donate or dispose of them."
Putting it in writing protects you if they later claim something was thrown out unfairly, and a firm date stops the items from becoming permanent clutter you feel guilty about touching. If the deadline passes with no response, you have a documented, reasonable basis to clear the space.
The point
If a departing roommate leaves belongings behind, set a written deadline for pickup before you donate or dispose of anything.
