How to Choose an Apartment to Rent Without Regrets

H howtolive.guide ·

Most apartment regrets come from things you did not check before signing. Visit at different times of day — a quiet street at noon can be a highway at rush hour. Run the faucets, flush the toilets, check water pressure and hot water speed. Open and close every window; listen for street noise with them shut. Test cell signal in every room.

Beyond the apartment itself, walk the neighborhood. Check the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, public transit stop, and laundromat. Ask the landlord about included utilities, lease break penalties, and who handles repairs. Take photos of any existing damage before move-in and send them to the landlord in writing. A 10-minute inspection now prevents 12 months of frustration later.

The point
Visit at different times, test everything that runs or opens, and document existing damage — a thorough visit prevents a year of regret.

Visit the apartment at different times of day. I loved mine at 2pm — quiet, sunny. Moved in and discovered: bar next door, zero sunlight after 4pm, traffic noise all morning. Now I always visit at least twice.

Also check water pressure. Turn on the shower during your visit. I learned this the hard way.
