Happiness and Meaning Are Not the Same Thing

Happiness is a feeling — pleasant, fleeting, dependent on circumstances. Meaning is a direction — steady, sometimes painful, built on commitment. The most meaningful periods of your life will often be the hardest: raising children, building something from nothing, standing by someone through illness. Don't confuse a comfortable life with a worthwhile one.
Chase meaning and happiness will visit. Chase happiness alone and you'll wonder why everything feels hollow.
The point
A meaningful life and a happy life overlap but are not identical — and confusing them leads to the wrong choices.
