Learn the Vocabulary Before the Theory

H howtolive.guide ·

Every field has its own language — and if you don't speak it, even the best explanations sound like gibberish. You sit in a lecture or open a textbook and the sentences are grammatically clear, but the meaning slides off your brain because every third word is unfamiliar. Before diving into a new subject, spend dedicated time learning its core vocabulary. Not the entire jargon — just the 20-30 terms that appear constantly.

This single investment changes everything that follows. Suddenly explanations make sense on first read. Discussions become followable. You can actually think about the ideas instead of constantly pausing to decode the words. It's like learning the alphabet before trying to read a novel — obvious in hindsight, but almost nobody does it deliberately. A glossary pass before you start is one of the highest-leverage things you can do.

The point
Spend time learning a field's core vocabulary before studying its theory — this one investment makes everything that follows dramatically easier.
