Backing Up Your Phone — Why and How to Do It Right

Your phone holds irreplaceable photos, conversations, contacts, and app data. Drop it in water, lose it on a train, or have it stolen — and without a backup, all of it is gone in an instant. Set up automatic cloud backups so your phone backs itself up regularly without you having to remember. Most phones have this built in; you just need to enable it and make sure you have enough storage.

Know what the backup actually covers. On an iPhone with iCloud Photos turned on, your photos are not part of the iCloud backup — they are only synced, so a photo you delete disappears everywhere once the Recently Deleted period runs out: why sync is not backup. Looking at what is listed in your backup is not the same as restoring from it. Now and then, restore a photo or a contact to check that it works: an untested backup is not a backup. A few minutes of setup protect years of data you cannot replace.
